Dogs of Creation

Guelph Museums/Virtual Museums of Canada

Our Challenge: The Guelph Children's Museum dreamed of translating an already successful exhibit to work on the web, creating a large interactive storytelling site. A grant was sourced from the Canadian Heritage Information Network, Virtual Museums of Canada program, which meant the stakes were high, as the site would attract national exposure. The goal: to present two century's worth of content in a fun and educational way for visitors of all ages.

Our Solution: The content was divided into five time periods that were presented visually to allow visitors to see how the city of Guelph evolved. Children and adults can participate in learning activities based around interactive content, similar to that found at the museum. Flash, QuickTime, PDFs and dynamic programming were used to make the site engaging. Barking Dog Studios worked with Guelph Museums staff from the grant application stage through to the site launch.

Our Achievements: The Victorian streetcar ride - it rocks. We also like that content on the site is presented in English, French and Ojibwe. From a functional standpoint, we went to great lengths to ensure a great experience for both high-speed and dial-up users. This project launched in December 2002 and is teaching people from all over the world what it was like to grow up in Guelph.
